Weeks 11-12 summary

During these past two weeks we have worked on showing a route's step by step information and providing a way to search for attractions. Unique markers were created for attraction types. Ability to show user's location and a notification of said feature were added. Multiple small UI changes were made and the support for responsive design was created.

ICT Showroom

How did it go?

The ICT Showroom went by quite nicely. After we had completed the building of the stand in the busy morning, we had fun presenting our project and learning from it.

How did we manage?

We are feeling positive about our presentation in the ICT Showroom. While I (Olavi) might have frozen up during the main jury visit, we got a lot of interested people at our stand during the day.

What was good and what was not so good?

Overall the event was a good experience, we got to meet with interesting companies and projects and saw many new ideas. The only problematic thing was the setting up of the stands, where getting the space for one table was surprisingly hard.

What did you learn out of organising & participating in the Showroom?

In the future we will have to give more thought in to the stand itself and how are we going to present the project on the stand. The event gave us practice on presenting to actual companies and more knowledge on what they want to hear.

What did you learn out of the other projects?

A few of the groups that did well had a lot more active presenting and they tried to get the attention of the visitors. Other groups had a more easier stand to come to with a clearer idea on what the project is about. A common first question for our stand was: "So what is your project about?".

What would you do differently next event?

We are thinking about giving the user direct access to the website right on the stand, either on a computer or a tablet. The presenting could be a bit more active.

Week 7-9 summary

During these couple weeks we finalized the poster for the ICT Showroom and made advances in the project. For example we have multiple destinations working for the routing and the project can now be accessed from an external server. The list of attractions has grown and the functionality to show them on the map has been worked on.

Week 6 summary

During week 6 we were able to get a basic UI working to get the different routing selections and the control of the isochrones' ranges. Geocoding was added to the page so that the user can search routes using road names. The video pitch was filmed and edited at the end of the week.

Week 5 summary

During week 5 we got routing to work between markers with different routing options. Isochrones are working with a hard coded range and interval. Work on UI and preparing for the pitching video were started.

Week 4 summary

During week 4 we were able to set up the git project for the website and create a basic server and a basic client that can be worked on in the future. Different possibilities for the website's UI were thought about to help the addition of future features.

Week 3 and 4 summary

Week 3

On week 3 our team met with the project owners and held the sprint planning for the next two weeks. The main goals for the sprint were decided to be mainly researching available technologies and creating a framework on which to start building the website. At the end of Friday we were able to decide on the technologies to use, had a basic map on a webpage and found a few ideas how to differentiate our project from others.

Week 4 Summaries

Olavi Viitanen

During this week I mainly focused on the client side of the webpage trying to get leaflet markers working on the map and accessing their location information. A lot of the time was spent on researching leaflet and recapping how html and css works. During the week there was also a lot of discussion with the group about everyone's tasks and the ICT show room. On Friday I spent some time drawing UI possibilities on paper.

Eppu Peltonen

I started to look into Leaflet JavaScript library and how we can use it. I did some testing with Leaflet and tried to see how it works. I also revised some JavaScript.

Łukasz Tomczyk

I looked into OpenRouteService to use it for routing, geocoding and creating isochrones on the map. I also did some very simple tests with Leaflet, to get familliar with this library.

Arkadiusz Mączkowski

I was trying to get familiar with the Leaflet library and learn how to use it. I also managed to use Google Maps API to collect adresses of the markers and display them in popups.

Alfons Salmi

Developed the java server, mostly set up a project that uses the OpenTripPlanner to start up a server that can handle routing requests. Also made couple handy programs for downloading GTFS data.

I looked into Leaflet library and tried to get familiar with it and thought about UI.

I am exchange student from Poland. I came to Turku University of Applied Sciences for ICT projects & Cybersecurity semester. I am interested in programming and I try to learn new programming languages during my free time.

I hope that this project will allow me to further develop my skills in this field, as well as, I will learn to work better in a team. I have basic experience in web development, which I gained during an internship, that I think, and hope, might be useful for our team.

One of the answers stated "I would like to find an application which will show me with attractions. Moreover, I like to visit unknown places-locals tips are very helpful."
We could confirmed that there is definitely high demand for our project.
